You pull your vape out of your pocket and your fingers come back sticky. Or there's a puddle in the battery bay. Or you got a mouthful of e-liquid instead of vapour and now your tongue is numb.
Leaking is the single most common complaint we hear across the counter, and the good news is that it's almost always a habit rather than a broken device. Ten years in, here are the seven causes we actually see — roughly in order of how often they're the culprit.
⚡ TL;DR
- Overfilling is cause number one. Fill just below the max line, never to the brim.
- Never fill the centre tube — that's the airway, and liquid in there goes straight to your mouth.
- Hard draws flood the coil. Slow and steady beats sharp and deep.
- Condensation isn't leaking. A few drops in the bay after a cold-to-warm move is normal — wipe and carry on.
- Flying? Remove the pod and pack it upright. Cabin pressure pushes liquid out.
1. You Overfilled It
Pods have a max line for a reason. Every pod needs an air pocket to maintain the pressure balance that keeps liquid in the wick instead of running out of it. Fill to the very top and you've removed that pocket, so the first pressure change pushes liquid out the airflow holes.
Fix: stop a few millimetres below the line. You lose maybe two puffs of capacity and gain a dry pocket.
2. You Filled the Centre Tube
Most refillable pods have a fill port off to one side and a wider tube up the middle. That middle tube is the airway — the path from coil to mouthpiece. Liquid poured down it has nowhere to go but into your mouth on the next draw.
Uwell pods mark the correct port, often in a different colour. If you're unsure which hole is which, hold it to the light: the airway runs clean through the pod, the fill port doesn't.
3. You're Drawing Too Hard
Pod systems are built for a gentle mouth-to-lung pull, not a sharp lung-full. A hard draw pulls more liquid into the coil than the wick can vaporise, and the excess pools and escapes — often straight up the airway as spitback.
Fix: slower, longer, softer. If you want a bigger lung hit, that's a different device class — a sub-ohm tank rather than a pod.
4. The Coil Is Done
A worn wick stops absorbing properly, so liquid sits in the chamber instead of being drawn up and vaporised. Leaking and a burnt taste together is the clearest sign a pod has reached the end.
Grab a fresh one from our replacement pods and coils range, and remember to let a new pod sit 10 minutes after filling before the first pull.
5. Temperature Swings
Warm e-liquid thins out and moves more freely. Leave a device on a dashboard in July or next to a heater and you've essentially turned your juice into water.
The reverse causes a different problem: bring a cold device into a warm room and condensation forms in the bay. That looks like a leak but isn't — wipe it dry and it's fine. We cover the winter version of this in our cold weather guide.
6. Air Pressure — Flying and Elevation
Cabin pressure drops, the air inside your pod expands, and it pushes liquid out. Uwell explicitly recommends removing the pod and storing it separately when you fly.
Fix: pod out, stored upright in a bag, device in your carry-on. Vape batteries aren't allowed in checked luggage anyway.
7. Worn Seals or a Cracked Pod
The least common cause, but real. The silicone plug over the fill port wears out, or the pod develops a hairline crack from a drop onto concrete. Neither is repairable — the pod is a sealed consumable.
If a brand-new pod leaks immediately, it's likely a defective unit. Bring it in and we'll take a look.
⚠️ If liquid got into the battery: take the pod out and dry the contact pins right away. E-liquid on the contacts is the main cause of short-circuit errors — see what "Check Atomizer" and blinking lights mean. Left alone, it can kill the device.
The 30-Second Prevention Routine
- Fill below the max line, through the correct port only.
- Cap it properly — listen for the click.
- Let a new pod sit 10 minutes before the first pull.
- Store it upright, not on its side in a bag.
- Keep it out of hot cars and off heaters.
- Draw gently.
- Replace the pod when flavour fades — don't ride it to failure.

FAQ
Why is my vape leaking from the bottom?
Usually overfilling, a worn-out coil, or heat thinning the e-liquid. Remove the pod, dry the battery contacts, and try a fresh pod filled just below the max line.
Is it normal for a vape to leak a little?
A few drops of condensation in the battery bay is normal, especially after moving between cold and warm air. Pooling liquid, sticky pockets, or liquid in your mouth are not.
Why do I get e-liquid in my mouth when I vape?
That's spitback, usually caused by drawing too hard or by filling e-liquid down the centre airway instead of the fill port. Draw more gently and check which hole you're filling.
Can I fix a leaking pod?
You can fix the habits that cause leaking, but a cracked pod or worn seal can't be repaired — pods are sealed consumables and need replacing.
Should I take my vape apart on a plane?
Remove the pod and store it upright and separately, since cabin pressure changes force liquid out. Vape devices and batteries must travel in carry-on, never checked baggage.
