Nobody sells you a pod system and then explains how to fill it properly. You get a device, a pod, and a vague assumption that it's obvious.
It mostly is — but the handful of details nobody mentions are exactly the ones that decide whether a pod lasts three days or three weeks. Since pods are the ongoing cost of owning a refillable, that difference adds up fast.
⚡ TL;DR
- Fill the side port, never the centre tube. The middle one is the airway.
- Stop below the max line. Pods need an air pocket.
- Wait 10 minutes before the first pull. This is the step everyone skips and it's the one that matters most.
- Never let it run dry. Top up at a quarter full — dry firing is what kills coils.
- A well-treated pod handles roughly a 30mL bottle. A badly treated one dies in days.
Step 1: Find the Right Hole
Take the pod out and look at the bottom or the top, depending on the design. You'll see a wide tube through the middle and a smaller port off to one side, often under a silicone flap or marked in a different colour.
The middle tube is the airway. It runs clean through the pod to the mouthpiece. Fill that and the liquid goes directly into your mouth on the first draw. The side port is the fill port.
Step 2: Fill Slowly, and Stop Early
Tip the pod slightly and run the liquid down the inside wall rather than blasting it into the middle. Slow filling lets air escape as liquid goes in; fast filling traps bubbles that starve the wick later.
Stop a few millimetres below the max line. That air pocket maintains the pressure balance that keeps liquid in the wick instead of pushing it out the airflow holes. Filling to the brim is the number one cause of leaking.
Step 3: Wait Ten Minutes
This is the whole article in one line. Let a newly filled pod sit for ten minutes before you vape it.
The cotton wick needs to fully saturate. Fire a dry wick and you scorch it instantly — permanently. That's the harsh, acrid taste you can never wash out, and it means a brand-new pod is ruined in one pull. Uwell puts the ten-minute instruction in their manuals for exactly this reason.
Fill it before you make coffee. Come back when the coffee's done.
💡 Counter trick: after filling, take 3–4 pulls with the device off (or without pressing the button). That draws liquid into the wick mechanically and speeds up saturation. Then still wait.
Step 4: Don't Run It Dry
Vaping the last few drops is how most coils actually die. Once liquid drops below the wick ports, you're firing partly dry cotton every pull.
Refill at about a quarter full. There's no penalty for topping up early, and you never touch dry cotton. If you've already crossed that line, our burnt taste guide covers what's salvageable.
How Long Should a Pod Actually Last?
Treated well, a pod generally handles somewhere around a 30mL bottle before flavour starts to fade. At typical use that's roughly two to four weeks.
What shortens it:
- Sweeter e-liquids. Higher-sweetener juices caramelise on the coil and gunk it far faster than simple fruit or menthol profiles. This is the single biggest variable.
- Chain vaping. The wick can't keep pace, so you get partial dry hits repeatedly.
- Running it low. Covered above.
- High wattage. More power means faster wear. Sensible if you want it, just factor in the cost.
Newer pod platforms are pushing this further — Uwell's GPP Alpha cartridges are built specifically for extended refill life. Our Caliburn ECO family guide covers which pods fit which devices.
Knowing When It's Done
Flavour fading gradually is normal end-of-life — swap it. A sudden harsh or burnt taste means you dry-fired it. Gurgling or leaking alongside weak flavour means the wick has given up.

FAQ
How long should I wait after filling a vape pod?
Ten minutes. The wick needs to fully saturate before you fire it, otherwise you scorch the cotton on the first pull and ruin the pod permanently.
How long does a vape pod last?
Treated properly, roughly one 30mL bottle of e-juice, or about two to four weeks of typical use. Sweeter e-liquids shorten this considerably.
Which hole do I fill a pod through?
The smaller side port, usually under a silicone flap. The wider tube through the middle is the airway — filling that sends liquid straight to your mouth.
Why does my new pod taste burnt already?
Almost always because it was fired before the wick saturated. Once cotton is scorched it can't be recovered, so the pod needs replacing.
Should I let my pod run completely empty?
No. Refill at around a quarter full. Vaping below the wick ports means firing partly dry cotton, which is what kills most coils early.
