You paid good money for that vape. So why does it feel like it's running out faster than it should? With Gas Prices at an all-time high in Surrey, we feel your pain. Let's try and stretch that dollar!
The puff count on the box is real — but it's based on short, consistent draws under lab conditions. Real-world vaping is messier, and a few common habits can cut your device's lifespan significantly. The good news: small adjustments make a genuine difference.
Here are eight practical ways to get more out of every device — whether you're on a 1,600-puff disposable or a 50,000-puff high-capacity unit.
1. Take Shorter, Controlled Draws
This is the single biggest factor affecting your puff count — and the easiest to change. The lab machines that test puff counts take consistent 1.5–2 second draws. If you're taking 4–5 second deep inhales, you're vaporizing roughly double the e-liquid per puff.
Shorter, controlled draws — around 2 seconds — use significantly less liquid per puff while still delivering a satisfying experience. You don't need to change how you vape dramatically. Just be a little more deliberate about draw length and you'll notice your device lasting noticeably longer.
2. Wait Between Puffs — Stop Chain Vaping
This one directly connects to the burnt taste issue we covered in another post, but it also affects longevity. When you chain vape — multiple puffs in rapid succession — the wick doesn't have time to fully re-saturate with e-liquid between draws. The coil fires onto a partially dry wick, which is less efficient and burns through liquid faster.
Wait 10–15 seconds between puffs. The wick re-saturates, the coil fires more efficiently, and you use less liquid per session. It's a genuinely easy habit change that extends device life and improves flavour quality at the same time.
3. Use Standard Mode — Save Boost for Special Occasions
If you're on a device with multiple power modes — the BECO HOLO 35K, Frutti Bar 35K, STLTH x Geek Bar 80K, or similar — you have a Standard and a Boost or Pulse mode. Boost mode cranks the wattage, delivers bigger clouds and more intense flavour, and burns through e-liquid at a significantly higher rate.
If you run Boost mode all day every day, you might be getting 40–50% of the advertised puff count. Switch to Standard mode for daily vaping and save Boost for sessions where you actually want that extra intensity. Your device will last significantly longer and the flavour will stay cleaner over the full life of the device.
4. Store Your Device Upright at Room Temperature
Temperature and storage position both affect how efficiently your device works. Heat thins e-liquid, causing it to move away from the wick unevenly — leading to dry hits and wasted liquid. Cold thickens liquid, making the wick work harder to absorb it, and can reduce vapour production.
The ideal: store your vape upright at room temperature. Upright means gravity keeps the liquid pooled near the wick, ready to absorb. Don't leave it in a hot car, a sunny windowsill, or a frozen jacket pocket. If your device has been somewhere very hot or cold, give it 10–15 minutes at room temperature before vaping.
A gentle shake if the device has been on its side for a while can also help redistribute liquid that has settled unevenly.
5. Don't Overcharge — And Use the Right Charger
We covered this in detail in our burnt taste after charging post, but it's worth repeating in the context of longevity. Overcharging a disposable — especially with a fast charger designed for phones — generates heat that degrades the coil and wicks over time.
Keep these charging rules in mind:
- Use a low-voltage charger — under 5V, ideally under 1V if possible
- Charge for 20–30 minutes, not overnight
- If your device has a battery indicator, unplug around 90%
- Never use laptop, phone, or car USB chargers on a disposable
- Wait at least 5 minutes after charging before vaping
6. Take Primer Puffs on a New Device
Every new device benefits from 2–3 gentle primer puffs before you settle into normal use. These light draws pull e-liquid through the wick and ensure it's fully saturated before the coil gets pushed harder. Starting a new device with a big, deep draw on an incompletely saturated wick can cause minor coil stress that compounds over the life of the device.
30 seconds of gentle primer puffs when you first open a device protects the coil and ensures you're getting clean, consistent flavour from the start.
7. Keep the Mouthpiece Clean
This one gets overlooked. Lint, dust, and pocket debris can accumulate in the mouthpiece over time and partially restrict airflow. Restricted airflow means you instinctively draw harder to compensate — which means longer, more powerful puffs that use more liquid.
A quick wipe of the mouthpiece with a tissue every few days keeps airflow consistent and means you're drawing at the right intensity rather than fighting a blocked mouthpiece without realizing it.
8. Upgrade to a Higher-Puff Device
This sounds counterintuitive, but it genuinely works. If you're on a 1,600-puff device and going through one every 2–3 days, you're in an expensive cycle — and the per-puff cost is high. Upgrading to a 35K or 50K device gives you dramatically better value per puff, often at a similar or lower monthly spend.
For example — if you're spending $20 on a Fog Formula 1600 every 3 days, that's roughly $200 a month. A Frutti Bar 35K at $29.99 lasts 3–5 weeks for a moderate vaper. The math gets dramatically better very quickly.
And if you really want to maximise value — a refillable like the Caliburn G5 Lite at $19.99 paired with a $27.99 bottle of Salt Nic e-juice brings your monthly spend to around $32.99 all-in. Device lasts years. That's the most efficient vaping setup available at any price point.
Quick Reference — The 8 Rules
| Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Shorter draws (2 sec) | Uses less liquid per puff |
| Wait 10–15 sec between puffs | Wick re-saturates, coil runs cleaner |
| Standard mode daily, Boost occasionally | Lower wattage = lower consumption |
| Store upright at room temperature | Keeps wick saturated, prevents liquid shifting |
| Charge 20–30 min, low voltage | Protects coil from heat damage |
| Primer puffs on new devices | Protects coil from first-use stress |
| Keep mouthpiece clean | Consistent airflow = consistent draw intensity |
| Upgrade to higher-puff device | Better value per puff, less frequent replacement |
